Foid-bearing Syenite Thin Section

fbsynts_001. A nepheline analcime syenite formed from a doleritic intrusion at Cnoc Rhaonastil, Isle of Islay, Scotland. The sample contains large grains of nepheline that have undergone alteration and exsolution, forming plagioclase. It also contains aegirine pyroxene, biotite, and small patches of the zeolite analcime. Image from the UK Virtual Microscope.

fbsynts_002. Sodalite-bearing syenite, Borralan intrusion, Sutherland, Scotland. This thin section contains elongated crystals of orthoclase with green, pleochroic aegirine-augite pyroxene as well as sodalite and biotite. Image from the UK Virtual Microscope.

Foid-bearing Syenite Thin Section

fbsynts_003. Nepheline-bearing syenite, Borralan intrusion, Loch Borralan, Scotland. This syenite thin section contains large brownish crystals of garnet, elongate crystals of orthoclase, nepheline, and phlogopite mica. The border scales are in mm. Image from the UK Virtual Microscope.
