SURF 2025 Payment Update
Stipend Payments
- Most undergraduate SURF students are paid via stipend

Status: Stipends submitted to SURF by 5/14/25 have been sent to Accounts Payable.

Expected Payment Date: On or before June 6.

Student Action Needed:

Usually none, other than to check your bank account weekly. Payments are made on a rolling basis on Thursdays, with funds generally available of Fridays.

Undergrads Paid Hourly via NIH Grants (or other grant that requires hourly dispersal)

Hiring: Must be hired directly by the advisor.

Coordination: Advisors should work with Admin Coordinators for assistance with undergarduate student hiring.

Enter timesheets in Workday every 2 weeks, by noon on Monday. Students are encouraged to enter their time weekly so they do not forget. No timesheet=no pay.

Next Pay Date: 05/23/25

Covers hours from 05/04–05/17/25.

Graduating Seniors (must be hired as casual workers via Human Resources)

Hiring Status: HR has processed most hires for those submitted before 05/09/25.

Payment Method: Hourly via timesheet.

The stipend rate for summer 2025 will be $610 per week, for 40 hours per week.
Campus Housing will be charged in 2025 at a weekly rate of $275 (includes room and board), billed by block period. Students who receive a meal plan exemption qualify for a reduced weekly rate of $165 (includes room only).

| Engineering | No formal SURF application process, students should contact potential advisors directly | March 7, 2025 | Based on student interest and available research opportunities, faculty identify students who are well matched to available projects. through the academic advising process students are encouraged to reach out to faculty who may have available research opportunities in the student’s area of interest. In addition, students who develop specific areas of interest are encouraged to participate in special studies which can provide an accessible gateway to SURF. Another gateway to SURF is AEMES, STRIDE and funded research positions at Smith. We also advise students about the many opportunities (such as REU, industry internships and PRAXIS) for broadening their research experiences. |
