3.3 Saturated Solutions (continued)

Figure 3.04. Halite saturation composition graph. Mixtures of water and halite (NaCl) in Figure 3.03 are shown on a graph of weight percent NaCl vs. temperature. Click on the graph to see a larger, interactive version with more information.

Detailed measurements by several scientists (Rodebush, 1918; Scott and Frazier, 1927; Washburn, 1928) found the weight percent of NaCl in a halite saturated solution at 21°C to be 26.19, so our simple experiment did a good job of bracketting the halite-saturated composition of the brine to between 23 and 28 weight percent NaCl. Based on your previous knowledge of salt solutions, there is more that you can say about the samples.

What do you know about the chemical composition of the brines for the three mixtures to the right of the line that are saturated with halite? Assume chemical equilibrium. Please make a choice from the following list and press "Enter":

Pick one.
Mixtures with more halite remaining have a higher weight percent NaCl in the brine.
Mixtures with halite remaining all have the same weight percent NaCl in the brine.
Mixtures with more halite remaining have a lower weight percent NaCl in the brine.
Because halite remains, nothing is known about the composition of the brines.
