State of the Lab Spring 2026
The SAL (Sabin-Reed 104) is open during the Clark Science Center building hours. The SAL Annex, our smaller space in Neilson 012D, is open during the Neilson Library building hours to anyone with a valid OneCard.
When classes aren't using one of our labs, you're welcome to work on any open computers, use the light table, check out books from our lending library, and explore the map cases. When classes are in session, try our other space or check with the instructor before class about quietly working on an open computer.
Check out our Calendar to see when the lab is in use and to find out about events, drop-in help hours, and more. For SAL updates, subscribe to the mapmonsters listserv by emailing mapmonsters-join@div3lists.smith.edu.

The Spatial Analysis Lab (the SAL) is a mapping lab dedicated to thoughtful and creative spatial data collection, analysis, and visualization. We strive to promote spatial literacy and spatial justice across the curriculum.
Our approach centers 1) using GIS, drones, and other technologies in ways that are ethical, usable to a diverse range of people, and appropriate. We also prioritize 2) collaboration with communities within and beyond Smith College to enhance curricular and co-curricular opportunities. Through this, we seek to 3) create accessible, understandable, and compelling maps and datasets.
The scope of our work includes teaching, research, and making, as well as managing two classroom lab spaces.
