Design of a New Device to Mix Clinical Samples for Blood Gas Analysis

IL Team: Laura Lilienkamp, Naylani Halpern-Wight, Dan Lin, Analia Vazquez Cegla

2017-2018: In collaboration with Instrumentation Laboratory (IL) and as a continuation project, this student team designed a blood sample mixing device for use prior to analysis in IL’s blood gas analyzer devices. Existing approaches for mixing blood samples are subjective, potentially leading to inconsistent mixing, pre-analytic error, and inaccurate results. The goal of this project was to develop a consistent and efficient mixing device that would reduce pre-analytic error.

The team delivered their successful functional design, along with CAD drawings and supporting documentation, to IL.
