Assignment 1 Design Doc
- Site Entrance
-
The "Welcome" page contains several relative links (with descriptions) to other pages on the site.
By clicking any of the music links (either in the page or in the menu along the side) will take the visitor to the corresponding page.
- Design Document
-
This page, which describes the layout and some specifics of this site.
- Content: (Middle Earth Holy Ghost Non-Album)
-
Each of the music pages has a list of in-page links which will take the visitor to more information about an individual track;
there are also external links to some of the files in question (most of the tracks are available for download).
- Links
-
A compiled list of the external links from the music pages.
- Style Sheet
-
The style sheet, which sets the link colors to match the menu bars.
- Inline Style Override
-
The style sheet is overridden in each of the music pages to temporarily change the background color.
- Images
-
The menubar items and the title bar items are made of images.
There is also an image on each of the music pages to show the cover of the album.
All of the images on this page have been given alt attributes, so that the page can be viewed reasonably well without images.
They are also given height and width constraints so that the page will render as quickly as possible, whether or not the images have loaded.
However, there should not be a problem with the images not loading, since the main navigation graphics are all optimized GIFs.
URLs
- Absolute: The links on the Links page are absolute links to other sites on the internet.
- Relative: The links in the menubar are relative links to other pages on this site.
- Internal: On the music pages, clicking on a song title will take the visitor to the description of the song lower on the page.
- Color Scheme
- The color scheme (purple and white) was chosen mostly because the particular shade of purple is one of the 216 official "web-safe" colors.
This page will therefore look essentially the same, whether in 8-bit or in 32-bit color.
- Layout
-
This page is viewable on a 640x480 screen.
However, if the visitor's resolution is higher, the page will not resize to make use of that space.
(I am currently working out a way to get past this constraint.)
There is an invisible table keeping the menubar and titlebar in the right places.
Some say that using tables for layout purposes is bad form; however, in this case, the table still keeps everything in order (that is, Title - Menu - Content), so using the table for layout purposes is not such a big deal.
- Maintenance
-
The most difficult part of maintenance would be, of course, adding something to the menubar, since that would have to be changed on all the pages.
However, with a simple search-and-replace tool such as BBEdit, replacing identical strings on multiple pages is a simple, fast process.
- This Site's Demo-graphic

This site was created on a Macintosh using Appleworks 5.0, Adobe Photoshop 6.0, and BBEdit 4.1.
