Design of an IoT Application Framework for Satellite Services

Iridium Team: Nandini Chakravorty, Maryam Shad, Cyrine Ben Ayed

2023-2024: In collaboration with Iridium, this student team developed an Internet of Things (IoT) application framework for ecosystem monitoring using Iridium Messaging Transport (IMT). The goal of the project was to provide a customizable framework on top of IMT to enable Iridium’s maritime partners to simplify their integration with Iridium and seamlessly transmit sensor data over the Iridium network.

After researching the satellite market and analyzing Iridium customers, the team selected unmanned surface vehicles (USVs) as the target use case and identified the key requirements. Using a modified agile approach, the team developed their framework to transmit GPS and temperature data from a USV via IMT to a user interface hosted on the Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud. The team’s semi-automated solution integrates four key functionalities: data collection from attached sensors, preprocessing and compression, data transmission to AWS, and decoding and display through a website interface. Following unit testing and initial system verification, the team delivered their code and recommendations to Iridium for continued development and implementation.
