Join the Lab

The Barresi Lab is always interested in new students joining our team!

There are a few ways to join the Barresi Lab.

First, some entering first-year students may be offered STRIDE or AEMES scholarships for which the Barresi Lab often provides opportunities, so look specifically for our project write-ups in those situations.

Secondly, Dr. Barresi has created a formal application to join the lab applicable for undergraduate students.  If interested, please complete the following google form.

Why a formal application you might ask?

Although we are in an academic setting with the main mission of education, becoming part of a research lab is like accepting formal employment. There are real commitments and responsibilities involved.  Other people and fish rely on your dependability and focused care in the work you do in lab.  Your own safety also relies on the highest level of care and focus when conducting experiments. It is important for all interested parties to understand the expectations associated with joining any laboratory and definitely to join this research team. We are a team, and look forward to you joining it!

Another reason for a formal application is to eliminate the “secret society of science”. How does one break into a career in science?  How to join a lab can be mysterious and intimidating.  Dr. Barresi firmly believes this is an endeavor for anyone and everyone to participate in.  It is not just for those who have had a well-funded and diverse background of support, through which they have learned the confidence needed to just go ask.   This application process is serving as a mechanism that attempts to equalize access.  If you do submit an application, please follow it up with a direct email to Dr. Barresi at mbarresi@smith.edu.
