Bio
I am a professor of Astronomy at Smith College.
I was born and raised in New York City and rural Connecticut. I went to Stuyvesant High School, Yale College, and the University of Arizona, and I was a postdoc at The Johns Hopkins University and Space Telescope Science Institute and at UC Santa Cruz / UCO / Lick Observatory.
I was on the faculty at UMass Amherst for five years before moving to Smith in 2002. Both Smith and UMass Amherst are part of the Five College Astronomy Department, along with Amherst, Hampshire, and Mt. Holyoke Colleges.
I am married to the writer, dancer, actor, playwright, and artist Mary Beth Brooker. Our daughter Melle is a writer, dancer, actor, artist, and circus performer. We live in Northampton, Massachusetts.
