Laboratory: Email Hazards

 

Legit, spam, hoax, or scam?

Email is undoubtedly a useful tool, but does also present certain hazards to the unwary user. This lab will introduce you to some of the things that are out there. Consider the following set of email documents:

In small groups, discuss and classify each one into one of the following categories:

Legitimate
This email doesn't fall into any of the hazardous categories listed below.
Spam
Unsolicited commercial email. This may range from innocent to invasive.
Hoax
This email spreads an untruth or seeks to propagate chain mail. You can verify most suspected hoaxes by going to Hoaxbusters, Snopes, or Urban Legends web sites.
Scam/Fraud
This email seeks to fool the recipient into revealing financially compromising information. Major categories include phishing emails and 419 scams.
