CSC104 Issues in Artificial Intelligence
Reading 2: Searle
Due Thursday 3 Apr

Last Update:

Searle's piece was published in Scientific American along with a rebuttal by the Churchlands. An updated version of the Churchlands' article is our 3rd reading, and you can peek ahead if that will help you understand Searle (but lookahead is not necessary).

If you are unfamiliar with the words syntax and semantics, this would be a good time to visit dictionary.com.

On p.3, col.3, "Why couldn't we program a Vax or a Cray..." Searle is a bit out of date, even in 1990. Vax and Cray are two large, mainframe computers from the 1980's.
