Course Catalog Description:
A half-semester introduction to several current issues in
the area of Artificial Intelligence:
- Intelligent behavior vs. rational thought: the Turing Test
and game programs;
- Learning and discovery: symbolic and numeric;
- Embodied intelligence: new directions robotics.
Prerequisites:
- Fluency with computers, including basic Web searching skills.
- Four years of high school mathematics recommended.

Time: TuTh 9:00-10:30.
(NB: Only one section, but enrollment unlimited.)

Work Load
Reading: Eleven papers of various lengths (total: 143 pages), roughly one
per class.
Quizzes: One 5-question quiz per reading,
one per class. Due day of discussion.
Questions: One discussion question per reading/class. This question is
submitted as part of the quiz before each class.
Reactions: One "reaction" per reading, 100-300 words. Due by next class
after the class discussion. [email to 104b@cs.smith.edu] These will be
graded only as +, ck, or -.
Paper: One short paper, 4-6 pages, due at end
of exam period., May 9th.
Grading
Quizzes: 25%; Discussion: 20%; Reactions: 30%; Paper: 25%.
Reader
There is no textbook, but I have prepared a collection of papers on the topics.
The reader may be purchased for $21 from The Science Center Office, Burton 115,
Daryl Jett. (Available from Thursday, 20 March 2003).
