Lab 7: Tableau Stories

  1. Today we'll again be working with a dataset containing the World Health Organization's most recent estimates of the prevalence and mortality of Tuberculosis by country. I've already created a few sheets to get you started, which you can access by downloading the following workbook (right-click and "Save Link As...") and opening it in Tableau. It should look something like this:

Check out a couple of the sheets, and then click the rightmost icon along the bottom toolbar to create a new Story.

  2. The Story environment looks something like this:

  3. Drag a sheet from the Dashboards and Worksheets area to the story, and drop it into the center of the view:

  4. To add a title to your story, double-click Story Title to open the Edit Title dialog box:

You can type your title in the dialog box, as well as choose a font, color, and alignment. Click Apply to view your changes, and OK to return to the main story panel.

  5. Click Add a Caption to summarize the story point:

Note: You can add descriptions and annotations within each story point if you want to provide more information.

  6. Add another story point. There are several way to add an additional story point:

  7. Once we've added a few points, we should get something that looks like this:

  8. Realize they should be in a different order? No problem! Just drag the descriptions into the right order:

  9. To present a story, use presentation mode. To switch in and out of presentation mode, click the Presentation Mode button on the toolbar. To exit Presentation Mode, press Esc or select the Presentation Mode button in the bottom right corner of the view.

Getting credit

You've learned how to make lots of different kinds of visualizations, work with different data types, and compose your visualizations together to tell stories. To get credit for this lab, write a short Piazza post containing a description of something you would still like to learn to do in Tableau that might help you when doing your final project: Piazza.
