Roughly, here's what you'll do: - hold help sessions before the homework is due: Monday, tuesday and Wednesday night, 7-10, Burton basement lab. If possible, I'd like you to take turns so that there will always be two TAs in the lab on Wednesday nights. That's when the homework is due, and when most of the students will be seeking help. - print the homework assignments after they are submitted. There is a script that helps you with that, but each week you'll have to slightly modify it to accomodate the new file name(s). I asked Geetika Tewari to show you how to do this. Please get in touch with her (I'll CC to you my email to her). - do a little "grading". Very superficial, like: does the program compile? work? any easy to spot bugs? Things like this. You can take turns with the printing and grading, each week somebody else. This way it the workload should be manageable. Roughly, the workload should be an average of 4 to 5 hours per week, sometimes more, sometimes less. Please let me know if you prefer to decide now who is doing what evenings. I understand that you might want to take turns on Wednesdays. If the schedule is not decided, I leave it to you to decide each week who does what - but: please make sure that every evening when TA hours are scheduled, one of you is there. To ensure this, I want you to email me (say, by Friday night each week) who will be doing what the next week. Sounds reasonable? The first homework is assigned this Thursday already. It is relatively stratightforward, just to make sure everybody knows the basics. Probably not too many students will need your help this week, but please be available. The hwk is due on Wednesday night. I would prefer to have it printed and "graded" by Thursday evening. If this does not sound feasible, what about Friday? See you soon. I look forward to working with you this semester. :-) Ileana From streinu@cs.smith.edu Wed Sep 6 15:28:53 2000 -0400 Date: Wed, 6 Sep 2000 15:28:53 -0400 From: Ileana Streinu To: TRACY LEVIN cc: "Rice, Christine -- Christine Rice" , Christine Rice Subject: mailing list for 112 Message-ID: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII Status: RO X-Status: X-Keywords: X-UID: 2 Tracy - We won't have a meeting tomorrow since not everybody can make it. Please get in contact with the other TAs and Geetika and learn how to use the scripts in the 112a account. We'll get together next week - I'll email you the details. I'd prefer Tuesday afternoon. Regarding your mailing list task: I left the pword for 112a in an envelope with your name on it, on my office door. Tomorrow after 10:30 I will leave the (student name - 112a-xx class account) information in an envelope, also with your name on it. Pick them up and create the class list in pine, like this: make an alias for each student, using her first name as identification, Then create a mailing list with all the students. If you have difficulty doing this, please contact Christie (to whom I am Cc-ing this email) and work on this together with her. I'd like it done by Th evening, shouldn't take more than 10-15 minutes. Thanks a lot. :-) Ileana From streinu@cs.smith.edu Mon Sep 11 01:34:40 2000 -0400 Date: Mon, 11 Sep 2000 01:34:40 -0400 From: Ileana Streinu To: Christine Rice , TRACY LEVIN , Ashley Green Subject: Re: TAing In-Reply-To: Message-ID: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII Status: RO X-Status: X-Keywords: X-UID: 3 > As of now, the schedule is: > > Mon-Ashley > Tues-Me > Wed-Tracy and I > Thurs-Tracy I guess Th means the printing and slight "grading" part. There will be no TA hours on Th. > Ashley and I might alternate Wednesdays, and/or she might help Tracy > on Thursdays. Sounds good to me. Also, a question for all of you: I had one student asking me about Sunday night. It is not clear yet whether this will be instead of Monday, but in case several students are interested in Sunday and want to drop Monday, who would be interested? More about this, on Tuesday after I check with the students. Ashley and Tracy, I need one more little thing from you, to finish the first-week preparations for the rest of the semester: an Excel spreadsheet with four columns: student name, class account, and two extra columns for me to enter data for each hwk. Tracy has the class list (or use the info in the mailing list you created in the class account 112a). Could you do it tonight and email it to me as an attachement? Thanks.
