CLASS MEETING: MWF 11-12:10

TEXT : Vector Calculus by Marsden and Tromba, 4th edition (Freeman)

GOALS: This course has 2 purposes:

1) to consolidate your knowledge of multivariate calculus.

2) to introduce you to the beautiful theorems of vector calculus (Green, Stokes, Gauss). These theorem were originally prompted by the physics of fluids and electromagnetism, but have become central in mathematics as well. Visit my home page soon for more information on the (tentative) schedule.

PREREQUISITE: MTH 211, 212 or permission of the instructor.

GROUP WORK: You will be asked to form groups in this class. This will be crucial in the consolidation part of our work, where you will be assigned reading of the text and the classes will be mostly conducted as problem sessions. I will go over the new material more formally.

HOMEWORK: Homework assigned on a Wednesday, Friday and Monday will be due on the Friday following that Monday. Most of the homework will be graded on a group basis. One group may volunteer to grade the homework each week (including theirs), and receive full credit for that week. Of course I will supervise this process.

EXAMS: There will be 2 midterms, the second one will be a take home. The take home will have 2 phases: one when you work alone, a second one when you work in group. Both phases will be graded. There will also be a self scheduled final as well as some short quizzes. As an alternative to the final, students may choose to do a special project, such as reading some sections we did not cover in class and solving some problems on it.
