CLASS MEETING : MWF 1:10-2:30
TEXT: Linear Algebra with Applications, by Otto Bretscher (Prentice Hall)
TOPICS COVERED: Systems of linear equations, Gaussian elimination, matrices and their inverses, vectors and vector spaces, linear transformations, span and null spaces, linear independence, bases, dimension, inner product and Gram-Schmidt process, determinants, eigenvalues and eigenvectors, diagonalization, some applications and moderate use of "Mathematica".
PREREQUISITE: MTH 112, or MTH 111 and 153. MTH 153 is suggested.
HOMEWORK: The homework will be posted on Course Info each week. It will be due on Fridays. You will be asked to bring preliminary drafts on Wednesdays that you will discuss in groups and with the class. Some green problems will be posted. These will be problems involving more complicated proofs or computations. Green problems can be resubmitted twice within a month after their due date (please include original with resubmits). The goal is to achieve well written, text book like arguments.
EXAMS: There will be 3 midterms. The first and
last ones will be in class. The second one will be a take home exam. There
will be two phases in the take home midterm: one when you work alone, the
other when you consult with your group. The total grade for Midterm 2 will
be an average of the grades for the two phases. There will also be a self
scheduled final as well as a few, short quizzes throughout the semester.
