Post-Baccalaureate Position in the Spatial Analysis Lab

The Spatial Analysis Lab will be hiring a Post-Baccalaureate Fellow for a 1 year position starting this Summer (July 2012).  The position is ideal for a student hoping to gain additional GIS experience before moving on to a more permanent job, or as a bridge before graduate school.   The position is designed for graduating seniors or recent graduates (within 3 years).  We are looking for someone who enjoys the spirit and rigors of an academic setting and who can contribute to the growth of GIS and Spatial Thinking at Smith.

Provide administrative and technical support for the broad range of programs and activities undertaken by the Smith College Spatial Analysis Lab (SAL). Support activities include documenting, maintaining, and acquiring spatial data, maintaining lab equipment and associated software.  Additional responsibilities include supporting classes, faculty, and students.


Data Documentation, Maintenance, and Acquisition (40%):  Provide administrative and program support to the GIS Specialist in maintaining the Lab’s spatial data collection(s).  Acquire or generate new digital materials to support classroom and research requirements.  Generate metadata as required to meet college, national and state standards.  Help promote data standards and guidelines to the user base.  Develop work flows to help students and faculty ensure all data meets adopted standards.  Supports other staff needs as necessary.  Performs related duties as required.

Equipment and Software Maintenance (30%):  Ensure all lab equipment is in working order, charged and ready for class or individual use.  Install updates, firmware, and datasets as required to all GPS units, total stations, and laser range finders.  Administer equipment sign-out, delivery, and return system.  Process field data for user community as needed.

Class & Individual Support (20%):  Help supervise student lab assistants.  Provide GIS and GPS instruction to faculty and students on an as needed basis.  Support all GIS/GPS workshops.

Administrative Support (10%):  Provide support as needed for internal and external programs and activities.  Activities may include: poster printing, conference planning and logistics, outreach activities, web page updates, database maintenance, and other administrative duties as required.


Education/Experience:  Bachelor’s degree.   Research or direct project experience with Geographic Information Systems, and Global Positioning Systems required.

Skills:   Well developed organizational and both written and verbal communication skills. Attention to detail very important.  Skills in computer programming, web based APIs, and database management experience highly desirable.
