The procedure is as follows:
set color settings
Before preparing for printing:
Set up the color settings in Adobe® Photoshop®.
- Color Working Space is the critical setting.
- Adobe RGB (1998) and ColorMatch RGB are each good for graphic arts.
Set to 'Ask when opening' for all profile mismatch situations.

save photos in Photoshop
Take an image in RGB color from a scanner, digital camera, or other
source.

In Adobe® Photoshop®, convert the image to CMYK profile by making
a mode change from RGB to CMYK, with correct profiles set for monitor, Color
Working Space, and CMYK profile (identified as a 'Working Space') in the Color
Settings dialog.
File in CMYK color, save in TIFF format.
Save the file in CMYK color in TIFF format for use in other
applications.

print directly from Photoshop (optional)
To print from Photoshop, choose Print under the File menu, and print
directly to the HP Designjet printer.
printing RGB directly from Photoshop
Use Photoshop's PostScript color management.
Set printing parameters.
For the HP Designjet software, in the Print tab of the Default Settings
dialog:
- Color management can be on (Standard Emulation) or off (Native).
- Set the appropriate Media type.
- Set the rendering intent to Perceptual.

printing CMYK directly from Photoshop
Either...
Use Photoshop's PostScript color management.
Set printing parameters.
For the HP Designjet software, in the Print tab of the Default Settings
dialog:
- Color management ('Perform color correction') can be on or off.
- Set the appropriate Media type.
- Set the rendering intent to Relative Colorimetric.
Or...
Do not use Photoshop's PostScript color management.
Set printing parameters.
For the HP Designjet software, in the Print tab of the Default Settings
dialog:
- Select Color Management: Standard Emulation.
- Set the appropriate Media type.
- Set the CMYK ICC input profile to the same profile as the printing press profile.
- (The output profile is selected automatically by the HP Designjet software.)
- Set the rendering intent to Colorimetric.
