The Mangiamele Lab is interested in the mechanisms of social communication in frogs and fish. Our primary work focuses on the evolution of multimodal communication signals and the neural and physiological adaptations that underlie them. We are also interested in how sensory systems integrate communication signals to guide social behaviors, and how those sensory processes are influenced by hormones. Our research is very integrative, combining experimental approaches and techniques from comparative neurobiology, endocrinology, and transcriptomics to answer questions about animal behavior.
