In this study, PC graduate student 'redshirt' Kathleen Boucher reports that Project Coach participants receive a significantly increased amount of physical activity in the program when compared to their peers who are not involved in PC. Using accelerometers to measure activity levels, the findings support the notion that PC kids are leading healthier lives thanks to their involvement in the program.
Marie's thesis was inspired by her work with youth coaches at PC. She saw a multitude of positive benefits that came from the time the teenage coaches spent at PC and began to wonder whether or not these benefits could transfer to other domains of their lives, in particular the context of school. Through research and the creation of four teen coach portraitures, she was able to understand why the "asset transfer" from after-school to school is so rare, while at the same time learning the great importance of programs such as Project Coach to youth.
In this paper, Allison Canton provides a brief history of out-of-school programming and explains "resilience" and its theoretical application to out-of-school programming. She then presents a case study of Project Coach and of Dennis "Cutty" Wise's informal boxing program depicted in HBO show The Wire to analyze their effectiveness in developing resilient youth. Finally, she outlines policy reforms that may help support young people's ability to cope with adversity.
Using the Experience Sampling Method (ESM) to get in the moment responses from PC youth inside and outside of the program, this study reveals that PC participants experienced significantly higher levels of seven of the ten asset categories (Search Institute) during time spent within the program as opposed to outside of it. Likewise, PC youth experienced higher asset levels during time spent in the program when compared to a control group sampled over the same timeframe.
A conceptual and practical overview of PC through the eyes of its founders, and their hypothesis that "views sports as the catalyst that provides the 'fuel' for engaging youth".
A brief exploratory looks at the PC program, its logistical structure and organization, and the results that have been gained since the inception of the program.
A scholarly articles written by the founders of the program, this piece articulates in particular the important connection between community-based projects and institutions of higher education, and the role of PC as a laboratory in forming ideas and initiatives about the after-school world, through the notion of social entrepreneurship.
