PLAN OF STUDY

Everyone needs an adviser.

When you arrive at Smith, you will be assigned a pre-major adviser. The college requires you to declare a major and identify a major adviser by the end of your sophomore year. You are encouraged to identify a major adviser from among the engineering faculty as soon as you know you are planning to major in engineering. This faculty member will help guide your academic choices.

To help each engineering major/prospective major and her adviser plan her academic career at Smith, the student is asked to fill out a Plan of Study (“the Plan”) each semester. It is a living document that you will update periodically throughout your time at Smith.

The purpose of this document is to help you think about your academic career and plan appropriately for it. Ultimately, your Plan of Study will indicate the fulfillment of your major requirements.

During the first semester of your senior year, the registrar will send a form that you, your adviser, and the program director must sign indicating that you have met the requirements for your Smith degree.  The information you have kept updated on the Plan of Study will form the basis of the information needed to complete the registrar’s form.

All departmental forms can be obtained from the program office in Ford Hall 155.
