DEGREE REQUIREMENTS

The Major: B. S. in Engineering

The minimum requirement to earn a Smith degree is 128 credits. Of those 128 credits, engineering majors are required to take:

52 engineering core and elective credits

36 math and science credits

A minimum of 24 credits in the humanities, the social sciences and history divisions

16 elective credits in any discipline

Majors will be required to demonstrate:

Breadth in the liberal arts by either double majoring or minoring in the humanities or social sciences or by completing Latin Honors (a course from each of the 7 major fields of knowledge: literature, historical studies, social science, the arts, foreign language, natural science, and mathematics/analytical philosophy)

Technical depth through a concentration in a particular area of engineering (mechanics, electrical systems, thermochemical processes, bioengineering, materials, engineering education, environmental engineering). This depth is developed through technical electives, undergraduate research, internships, and other co-curricular opportunities.

The Major: B. A. in Engineering Arts

The Picker Engineering Program offers a second degree, a B. A. in Engineering Arts. The B.A. in Engineering Arts is offered for those students who do not intend to pursue professional practice as engineers but recognize the increasing importance of science and technology in today’s world and understand engineering’s role in service to humanity. Note that the B. S. in engineering is the only ABET accredited degree.

Potential focus areas for an Engineering Arts degree might include engineering and the arts (architecture or landscape studies), education, public policy, economics, energy policy, ethics, and global development. With respect to engineering and education, students pursuing the BA in engineering arts could work toward a teaching certificate. Smith College has a licensure program for technology and engineering for grades 5-12 through the education department that is transferable to other states.
