What Will I Study?

There’s never been a better time—or a better place—for women to study engineering. The Picker Engineering Program offers an exciting, hands-on environment where students and faculty collaborate in all aspects of learning. Along with studying the essential principles of engineering, you’ll also focus on its social, political, economic, and environmental impact.

At Smith, engineering is integrated with the liberal arts. That means you'll get a broad education that bridges traditional boundaries between the sciences and humanities. You'll choose electives that enhance your understanding of engineering from Smith's vast course offerings. You'll learn to write in addition to solving equations. The Bachelor of Science degree in engineering science focuses on the fundamentals of all the engineering disciplines. With rigorous study in three basic areas—mechanics, electrical systems and thermochemical processes—you'll learn to structure engineering solutions to a variety of real-world problems. It's an exciting approach that encourages social responsibility, critical thinking, and leadership.

As an engineering major, you'll be encouraged to explore your interests through research, internship opportunities, and study abroad. The faculty is always available to advise you.
