Smith students have organized chapters of several national engineering organizations. These groups, which emphasize service on both local and global levels, link students with engineering professionals throughout the world. All chapters are student run, with student boards and officers advised by the Picker faculty and stafff.
Engineers for a Sustainable World
Engineers for a Sustainable World (ESW) is a nonprofit organization with a network of professionals and students working to reduce poverty and improve global sustainability. Engineering World Health
Engineering World Health (EWH) is a national organization created to address the needs of disadvantaged areas through providing and maintaining appropriate medical technology. In addition to engineering majors, the Smith chapter includes anthropology, biology, government, math, political science, physics, and theater majors. The group works to spread awareness about the need for better health-care in developing countries, as well as facilitate connections between Smith chapter members and the national organization. National Society of Black Engineers
The National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE), founded in 1975, is dedicated to the academic and professional success of African-American engineering students and professionals. Its objectives include increasing the number of minority studying engineering at both the undergraduate and graduate level. Society of Women Engineers
The Society of Women Engineers (SWE), founded in 1950, is a not-for-profit educational and service organization. The Smith chapter spreads awareness about engineering by hosting professional and social activities throughout the year—a lunch box series on topics such as internships, resume writing and graduate school as well as community outreach activities such as Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day. Tau Beta Kappa
Tau Beta Kappa (TBK) is Smith’s chapter of Tau Beta Pi, the National Engineering Honor Society. It recognizes engineering students who excel academically and who demonstrate service to the community.
