RECOGNITION

Ever since Smith announced its plans for the nation’s first engineering program at a women’s college, the Picker Program has received attention from educators and professionals in engineering. Now that the program is well established and its graduates are successfully pursuing careers and graduate studies, the accolades continue.

"Engineering is about creating solutions for human needs; it’s about continually improving our quality of life. To engineer well, the engineering profession needs a diversity of perspectives as much as it needs a deep understanding of mathematics and science. We need liberally educated, broad-thinking, creative engineers who can imagine the solutions that can be. Smith College is a pioneer in the diversification movement—helping us not only diversify our ethnic and gender representation, but also diversify the intellect of the individual engineer  through a broad and rigorous education.”
-- William Wulf, President of the National Academy of Engineering

"MITRE is a great place to work. We’re a national technology resource that tackles our government sponsors’ toughest challenges. We put together the nation’s most far-reaching information and communications systems, so we need the brightest, most creative and broadest thinking engineers and scientists.  Smith is developing a new and unique program that is very consistent with the type of engineer that MITRE seeks and we are excited about trying to attract Smith engineering graduates to MITRE.”
-- Martin Faga, President and CEO, MITRE Corporation

"Princeton takes pride in graduating the next generation of engineering leaders, and three of them are now faculty members at Smith. I have told Professor Grasso that we want the most ambitious Smith engineering graduates to go to Princeton for graduate school.”
-- James Wei, Dean of Engineering, Princeton University

"The field of engineering is changing dramatically. To ensure a sustainable future, we must consider the entire life cycle impact of our products. Here at Motorola, we are leading the way in this holistic approach to engineering. Similarly, Smith’s new engineering program is leading the way in educating young women engineers to think in the broadest possible terms about the role of technology in humanity’s future. That’s why graduates of Smith are important to companies like Motorola.”
-- Iwona Turlik, Corporate Vice President and Director of the Motorola Advanced Technology Center

"Duke’s graduate engineering program is highly competitive and attracts top applicants. Smith’s new engineering program promises to graduate rigorously educated engineers that would be very well suited to our graduate programs.”
-- Kristina Johnson, Dean of the School of Engineering, Duke University
