Following College precedent, the current curriculum of the Psychology Department at Smith is organized into 100-level “Introductory” courses, 200-level “Content” courses, 300-level “Labs & Seminars” and 400-level “Special Studies and Honors Projects.”
Majors must take a minimum of ten courses, with the only required courses being the “Basis” >> Introduction to Psychology (PSY 111), Statistical Methods (MATH 190/PSY 190) and Introduction to Research Methods (PSY 192). Minors must take two of the three “Basis” courses, and then complete no less than four additional courses from at least two of the Department’s five curricular tracks of study (see below).
Beyond the “Basis,” students are encouraged to sample courses across the following major curricular tracks of study, both within the Department and across other departments as well:
- Cognitive & Brain Sciences
- Health & Physiology of Behavior
- Culture & Development
- Clinical & Abnormal Psychology
- Social, Personality & Gender
In some cases, students also design unique courses of study by incorporating additional classes from other Smith departments, Five-College classes not offered at Smith, Junior Year Abroad experiences and original research in the field.
