The Peer Mentoring Program

Mentees.  The Peer Mentoring Program seeks to increase the participation of African American, Latina, Native American, Pacific Islander and first generation students in the sciences at Smith College.  Incoming students who intend to major in math, engineering or science are paired with a mentor, a seasoned student who usually majors in the same field.  Mentors and mentees also participate in a range of networking, support and social activities throughout the academic year as part of the program.

First-years, transfers and Ada Comstock Scholars who self-identify as member of a minority group in the sciences are encouraged to apply.

Mentors. Twenty upperclass science students are carefully selected to act as a support system to first year, transfer, and Ada Comstock scholars interested in the sciences, during a full academic year.  A reference from a Smith faculty member is required for acceptance.  Peer mentors act as a support to mentees, offering advice on “how to” navigate the first year.

AEMES - Achieving Excellence in Math, Engineering, and Sciences

AEMES is a program dedicated to building a community of diverse students in the sciences, math and engineering at Smith. In the fall of their first year, AEMES scholars take part in a seminar that develops skills to define and achieve academic goals. AEMES scholars also conduct research with a faculty advisor and participate in the Peer Mentoring Program described above.

Kate Queeney (Chemistry) and Laura Katz (Biology) lead this pilot program and can answer any questions about AEMES.
