Mission

The Science Inreach/Outreach Office is an extension of the Clark Science Center. The Office was established in 1995 with the aim of increasing and retaining the number of African American, Latina, Native American, Pacific Islander and first generation college students in engineering and the sciences at Smith College.

For this purpose, the Office sponsors two mentoring programs: AEMES and the Peer Mentoring Program. In addition, Jaynie Barnes, the Inreach/Outreach Coordinator periodically advertises a number of internship, scholarship and summer internships geared to the retention of underrepresented students in the sciences, both on-campus and elsewhere in the nation. Students are informed of these opportunities electronically, via email or by directly contacting Jaynie at her office in Burton 102.

History

The Science Inreach/Outreach Office was originally established by Director Casey Clark, in collaboration with Brenda Allen and several science faculty members in 1995, as an initiative to increase and retain the number of ethnic minority students in mathematics and science majors.

The Peer Mentoring Program was established in February of 1995, and has been continuously funded by a grant issued by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute.
