BACKGROUND

Professor Hsieh’s research uses laser spectroscopy (http://www.science.smith.edu/departments/Chem/Research/SHsieh/HsiehLab.htm) to characterize photochemical reactions.  Recent targets are organic hydroperoxides, which are atmospheric byproducts of hydrocarbon emissions such as methane.  These studies are supported under a National Science Foundation grant titled "Hydroperoxide photochemistry under solar wavelengths at dawn and dusk" (with co-PI Professor Linck) and a Henry Dreyfus Teacher Scholar Award.

Professor Hsieh is a 2009-2010 AAAS Science and Technology Policy Fellow, placed at Environmental Protection Agency headquarters in Washington, DC.  At the Office of Solid Waste and Emergency Response, she is involved in (1) policy efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through materials reuse and recycling and (2) characterization of environmental justice and chemical contaminant issues, particularly around waste incineration.
