As a mammalogist, Professor Hayssen is interested in the evolution, ecology, behavior, physiology, and systematics of all mammals. Her primary focus is on reproduction. For instance, she has looked at how wind loading and litter mass are related in bats, how climate is related to the timing of reproduction in deer, and how nesting location is related to litter size in squirrels. A secondary interest is how coat color relates to the ecology and biology of mammal
Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences, she is also Editor of Mammalian Species Accounts and American Society of Mammalogists.
