Professor Fratkin’s research focuses on land use and ecology of arid lands, particularly the adaptation of livestock keeping peoples in East Africa. He has written on ecology, economy, health, and social change among East African pastoralist societies, including the Ariaal Rendille, Samburu, and Maasai of Kenya, and recently on Mongolia.
