Drew Guswa is an assistant professor in Smith’s new Picker Engineering Program. He is a civil and environmental engineer with a focus on environmental fluid mechanics and hydrology, and his research involves modeling the movement of water through the natural environment, with particular attention to flow beneath the ground surface. Prof. Guswa graduated from Princeton University in 1994 with a B.S.E. from the Department of Civil Engineering and Operations Research. He received his M.S.C.E. in 1995 from Stanford University, and his Ph.D. in Civil and Environmental Engineering in 2000- also from Stanford University.

At Smith, Prof. Guswa teaches courses in engineering design, fluid mechanics, hydrology, water resources, and structural engineering. He views his teaching as an opportunity to pass on his enthusiasm for and knowledge of the built and natural environment. His current research interests include investigating the hydrologic mechanisms that underlie ecology patterns and processes and understanding the complex interplay and delicate balance among climate, hydrology, habitat, and development in the tropical montane cloud forests of Monteverde, Costa Rica.

Guswa and his wife, Sue, also an engineer, are avid sports fans and enjoy biking, hiking, and cross-country skiing.
