Professor Curran’s environmental research interests are primarily in the marine realm. With Professor Paulette Peckol and Smith geology and biology students, he has been very involved over the past several years in assessing the overall "health" of coral reef systems in the Bahamas and Belize. Curran is also actively involved in the study of ancient coral reefs as indicators of sea-level change in the wider Caribbean area. He has a long-standing interest in the problems and public policy of the coastal zone, and is conducting research projects on shallow marine environments, both modern and ancient, throughout the Bahamas.
