Lab Manager: University of Central Florida.
The position will be lab, greenhouse, and field based which will occasionally involve challenging outdoor work, sometimes during inclement weather. This is a one to two year position where the manager will organize undergraduate researchers to perform the following tasks: a herbarium study of Florida nonnative plants, germination trials in the greenhouse for restoration plots, field work in Central Florida and the potential for field work in coastal Massachusetts. If the manager has GIS skills, they will construct historical land use maps of central Florida using aerial photographs.

Founded over a century ago, Christodora/The Manice Education Center is a non-sectarian, nonprofit organization devoted to giving New York City's inner-city children a first hand experience and appreciation of nature. The Manice Education Center, in the Berkshire Mountains, operates high-quality environmental education, wilderness camping and leadership programs for up to 40 students, ages 12-18, from May through October, in a unique wilderness setting with a student to staff ratio of 6:1.

Job Description:

Position available immediately. Current position runs until October 31, 2007 with possibility of continuing year round. Work closely with the Director to train, develop and supervise all teaching and support staff at MEC. Fulfill the role of "Acting Director" during Director's absence. Coordinate timing and schedule of all on-site programs on a daily basis. Facilitate and encourage curriculum/program development with the program staff. Work to ensure the delivery of consistently safe, high quality programs that meet Christodora-Manice philosophy and goals. Act as primary liaison between teaching-support staff and Director. Coordinate curriculum needs of school teachers with the resources and potential curriculum at the Manice Education Center. Acquire/maintain appropriate safety & training certifications including Adult CPR, Wilderness First Aid, and Lifeguard Training. Ensure that Manice staff and programs are operating according to established policies and procedures so as to meet or exceed all state/local codes and any insurers' recommendations. Act as primary liaison with visiting teachers and MEC staff concerning questions/problems of discipline, programs, policies or procedures. Inspect the grounds and facilities, including tents, on a daily basis to ensure they are neat, clean, safe and in good functional condition. Communicate problems, needs and recommendations for repair/replacement to the Director. Perform other tasks as needed including teaching lessons, supervising tents and planning centerwide special events.

The National Wildlife Refuge Association (NWRA) works to build support within Congress, the Administration and the American public for the 100-million acre National Wildlife Refuge System, lands managed for wildlife conservation by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service within the U.S. Department of the Interior. As a primary means of influencing Refuge System policy the NWRA mobilizes more than 240 refuge volunteer "Friends" groups nationwide that represent an estimated 40,000 individuals.

Director, Grassroots Outreach

The Director of Grassroots Outreach is responsible for identifying, educating and mobilizing local conservation constituencies to support national wildlife refuges across the country with the goal of increasing community awareness, volunteer involvement and advocacy on behalf of the National Wildlife Refuge System.
The Director of Grassroots Outreach is responsible for daily interaction and communications with refuge "Friends" support groups nationwide.

Qualifications
This position requires travel, public speaking and exceptional interpersonal skills. Candidates must have a BA or higher and experience working with not-for-profit advocacy groups is preferable.
Capitol Hill experience or work with local or state decision makers a plus, including political campaigns. Enthusiasm for wildlife and national wildlife refuges strongly encouraged. The Director of Grassroots Outreach reports to the Vice-President of Government Affairs.

Environmental / Resource Analyst

The Southwest Conservation District, Inc. a nonprofit organization whose mission is to promote the sound use and management of our natural resources, seeks a full-time individual to assist on projects and the review of erosion and sediment control plans, stormwater plans, wetland impact studies plus other environmental or conservation documents prepared by municipalities or developers. Collaborates with stakeholder groups to develop and implement various watershed restoration plans in the southwest region of CT. Assists the organization in publishing newsletters, annual fundraising events and community outreach and education programs.

Successful candidate will have BS in earth science, soil science, geology, hydrology, biology or closely related scientific / environmental field. Proficiency in computer database programs, data analysis, E&S certification and knowledge of GIS are a plus. Our approach is research-based and non-chemical. Will initiate or continue, under guidance of a mentor, experiments or observational studies that explore non-chemical control methods for top several exotic species identified during 2003-04 stream monitoring and mapping in our Bell Creek. Will also initiate or continue experiments or observational studies on techniques for enhancing native stream vegetation. Will write protocols, execute research, then write final reports. Will re-sample vegetation along monitoring transects. During the 2007-08 season we want to make progress with exotic species removal, so there will be a large component of physical weed removal. A new 1,500 acre public park with extensive natural areas and environmental education programming is being designed. Many natural habitats and a strong ecological background throughout the park will be highlighted. The ecological team requires a staff member with knowledge of Southern California habitats and restoration ecology protocols, to work with wildlife biologists and the diverse professional group at the Great Park design team, including landscape architects, engineers, architects, and construction managers. The Public Lands Institute at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas seeks a research assistant for its Weed Sentry/Restoration Program to conduct vegetation field surveys and research at Lake Mead National Recreation Area and on other federal lands in Clark County, Nevada. The position will be based at National Park Service offices in Boulder City, Nevada. This is a full-time, externally funded position with benefits. The goals of the Weed Sentry/Restoration Program are to 1) map distributions of exotic species in Clark County and occasionally perform proactive control treatments, 2) develop/perform research and effectiveness monitoring projects to advance our understanding of the distribution, ecology, and control of exotic species in southern Nevada as well as how to improve existing survey and treatment methods, 3) provide treatment recommendations for control of exotic species to local resource managers, and 4) document findings of surveys and research by delivering presentations and submitting manuscripts to peer-reviewed scientific journals or other outlets. Work is performed in a wide variety of southern Nevada’s plant communities, ranging from the Mojave Desert to high-elevation forests. The position involves a mix of surveys and applied management-oriented research; the successful candidate will be interested in both these aspects of the position. This position is a good fit for candidates interested in restoration ecology, research/monitoring at landscape scales, and translating scientific information in to management prescriptions.

Responsibilities: The successful candidate will conduct field surveys and research of exotic plant species and native communities threatened by exotic species on federal lands in Clark County; map exotic plant infestations using GPS and GIS technologies; perform hand pulling or herbicide treatments in some instances; maintain records and databases of all survey data; develop/perform research and monitoring projects, including effectiveness monitoring of existing survey methods, treatment practices, and prediction of species distributions; write or assist in the completion of scientific publications on exotic species ecology and management; prepare or assist in the preparation of scholarly presentations at professional meetings and conferences; and assist in writing reports and funding proposals. Fieldwork will involve traversing uneven terrain in remote areas, frequently in a hot, desert climate. The position requires a flexible schedule and frequent local travel. Overnight travel and camping under primitive conditions may also be required.

Minimum Required Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in botany, ecology, biology, natural resources management, or a closely related field, with course work in plant taxonomy, plant identification, plant ecology or weed science. A minimum of one year comparable experience in related fieldwork and demonstrated knowledge of plant taxonomy and plant identification is required. Working knowledge of major native and exotic species of the southwestern United States may be substituted for plant taxonomy. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs and GPS/GIS required. U.S. citizenship and ability to obtain a Nevada driver’s license required. Ability to swim and ability to walk long distances in uneven terrain in a hot, desert climate are required. The successful candidate must pass a federal security clearance.

Preferred Qualifications: Master’s degree with a field-based thesis project, four-wheel drive and boating experience, experience in field orientation (i.e., navigation with map and compass), interest or experience in writing scientific manuscripts for submission to peer-reviewed journals or other outlets, and interest or experience in restoration ecology and supporting the application of ecologically based management prescriptions on the ground.

High Trails is a residential outdoor education center that needs good people to teach 6th grade students. There are many choices in the country, so we've got several reasons why we are the best:

OUR PROGRAM IS UNIQUE IN CALIFORNIA! We are a small upstart company who has jumped into the big leagues of outdoor education and still maintains the spark that started it all. We believe we can fight the man, change the world, and be happy all at the same time. We walk the fine line of telling you what to do and encouraging you to take ownership in the program.

OUR CORNER OF THE COUNTRY IS PRETTY DARN COOL! We are based in Big Bear, the coolest mountain town in Southern California; no other outdoor ed center is based here. From mountains to deserts to beaches, with a little small town atmosphere close by and a lot of big city amenities within a couple of hours...pretty nice...

Citizen Science Coordinator
Institute for Applied Ecology www.appliedeco.org (via the Northwest Service Academy)

Application Deadline: June 29th
Service Dates: September 13, 2007 - August 12, 2008

*Position Summary:* The Citizen Science Coordinator will work weekly with local school groups, teaching about Willamette Valley (Oregon) ecology and restoration while propagating endangered plant species for reintroduction with student and adult citizen scientists (70%). This will include seed collection, field assessment of potential reintroduction sites, and other associated field work (20%). In addition, s/he will work with the Program Director to develop a curriculum guide for doing endangered and native species reintroductions as service learning projects with school groups (10%).
