Frequently Asked Questions - General Administrative Questions

What is the best way to get rid of books?

We suggest that you donate them to the Nielson Library Book Sale. Box them up, complete and attach a Library Donation Form (get it from the library web site), and arrange with your Departmental Assistant where to leave the box.

What is the best way to get rid of equipment, tools, lab instruments, old furniture, furnishings, etc?

Your Departmental Assistant is scheduling pick-ups from a local auction house. This way, items are most likely to be put to good use, as a new owner will pay a nominal sum to acquire them.

What do I do with items that should simply be recycled?

Use recycling bins placed around the Science Center. If you have more than what fits in a bin, let your Departmental Assistant know so they can make arrangements with custodians.

What if I absolutely want to donate my items to a local school or non-profit organization?
This is a laborious process and strongly discouraged by the College. The College promotes using the local auction house as it circumvents any charges of favoritism, and in addition, shields those individuals, the department and the College who were involved in the process from legal actions if the donated material contains hazardous materials or if an accident happens while using it. Also, you might believe that items are the best re-used by somebody willing to pay an auction amount for it. Finally, College budgets receive a small supplement from the auction fees.
