2008 NNIN Research Experience for Undergraduates
The 2008 National Nanotechnology Infrastructure Network
Research Experience for Undergraduates Program
Dear colleagues,
This is a reminder that applications for the 2008 National Nanotechnology
Infrastructure Network Research Experience for Undergraduates Program (NNIN
REU) are being accepted right now, and that deadlines for submissions are fast
approaching. February 19 is the deadline for online applications and February
26 is the deadline for all application materials to be submitted. Complete
information about the program can be found at http://www.reu.nnin.org/.
An important goal of this REU program is to foster the professional
development of engineering and science students from underrepresented minority
groups. WE ESPECIALLY ENCOURAGE MINORITY STUDENTS TO APPLY.
Participants in the NNIN REU program will do nanotechnology-related research
next summer with scientists at the NNIN institutions, which include Univ. of
Michigan, UC Santa Barbara, Stanford, Cornell, Harvard, Georgia Tech, Howard,
Penn State, Univ. of Minnesota, Univ. of Washington, Univ. of New Mexico, Univ.
of Texas-Austin, and Triangle Litho in North Carolina.
Please forward this message to any undergraduate engineering and science
students who might be interested in participating in this exciting research
program.
Thank you for your help!

Award Process Begins
------------------------------------------------------------------------
During the summer of 2008, the National Nanotechnology Infrastructure
Network will host a Research Experience for Undergraduates Program
(NNIN REU) from June through August. Engineering and science students
with broad interests across disciplines focusing on nanotechnology
are eligible to apply if they are not graduating before the end of
the program in August 2008.
Minority and female candidates are especially encouraged to apply.
The chosen undergraduates taking part in the ten-week NNIN REU
program will receive hands-on nanoscience and technology experience
through research with applications to bio-engineering, chemistry,
electronics, materials science, optics, optoelectronics, physics, and
the life sciences. The research projects are designed and supervised
by the faculty and technical staff at the NNIN research facilities.
Interns work with faculty and graduate students on projects using the unique
resources offered at their award site. A three-day scientific convocation,
attended by all the network interns, will be held in
August to allow each intern the opportunity to present their work to
their peers in the form of a concise scientific presentation. Interns
also must complete a written report, akin to a research paper,
summarizing the findings of their research project. These reports are published
as the NNIN REU Research Accomplishments.
The NNIN REU Program is supported by the National Science Foundation,
and co-sponsored by NNIN and its industrial sponsors. Participants
receive a $3,800 stipend, plus housing and all travel expenses to
their research site and the convocation site. They may be responsible
for their own meals. Full participation in the site program and the
network convocation, and the submission of a final report, are all
mandatory.
Eligibility Requirements for NNIN REU Interns:
1] Undergraduate student interns must be citizens or permanent
residents of the United States or its possessions. A copy of your
green card is required if you are a permanent resident.
2] An undergraduate student is a student who is enrolled in a degree
program (part-time or full-time) leading to a baccalaureate or
associate degree. Students who are transferring from one college or
university to another and are enrolled at neither institution during
the intervening summer may participate. Students who have received
their bachelor's degrees (or will receive them in May/June) and are
no longer enrolled as undergraduates are not eligible to participate.
3] Liability and the use of hazardous materials in research demands
that our interns be over 18 years of age.
