Prof. Laura Katz is recruiting CS majors/research assistants
We have numerous bioinformatics projects that would benefit from CS student involvement. Most of these projects focus on analyses of genomic data (think >20,000,000 observations from single-cell and/or community samples) and/or phylogenomics (currently, we use ML approaches to create 13,000 evolutionary trees (one tree per gene) that include ~800 species covering ~2.6 billion years of evolution).
As many of you know, we were fortunate to have two outstanding CS students join our group [these last two years]…. and their work has turned into a major research paper that we aim to submit this month (with them as co-authors). Now we are looking for 1 or 2 CS sophomores/juniors who are interested in acquiring bioinformatic skills and developing longer-term projects.
I would really appreciate it if you could have interested students drop me a quick note, perhaps with an eye towards of doing a couple of credits of special studies this semester.
