Mathematical Modeling Hackathon

A message from Prof. Gwen Spencer, of the Math department @ Smith:

Greetings Math and CS students,

Are you worried about getting bored over the long winter break?

During Jan 19-23, Smith will be participating in an international Mathematical Modeling Competition. This is an intense 4-day challenge that will take place before the start of spring semester (if you are enrolled fall and spring on campus, there should be no issues returning to your room early). Each year, thousands of teams (3 students each) compete from all over the world!

Teams of 3 students each choose one of 6 open-ended problems to work on (including some options in Math Bio). It can be a great strategy to have a team with a mix of skills (math, stats and programming).

Intrigued? Check out this video about what the mathematical modeling process involves, talk to your friends/potential teammates, and consider whether you have the flexibility to return early to campus.

There will be an Info session on Nov 1 at 8 PM in Burton 307. Get in touch early if you are sure you want to participate, as Smith can sponsor at most 4 teams.

Best,

Gwen Spencer
