Smithies in CS group receives NCWIT award to send 25 students to WECode conference

NCWIT

NCWIT has selected Smithies in CS to receive the NCWIT Student Seed Fund (sponsored by Symantec)!

Smithies in CS will be using this generous grant to send a group of 25 talented students to WECode (Women Engineers Code), a conference hosted by Harvard University that provides technical workshops, empowering talks, and networking with tech companies and other women in tech.

Attending the conference will encourage students who may be interested in, but feel intimidated by computer science. Additionally, already experienced students may further advance their skills by building upon their existing knowledge. Attendees of WECode will be able to help spread the support network available for women in computer science. This will decrease the stereotype that women are not welcome and not fit for a career in computer science. This conference will provide attendees the opportunity to build the networks necessary to become pioneers and leaders in this field. With these connections, the attendees will learn more about resources currently available to women interested in entering the industry. Furthermore, by attending WECode, students help to grow the support network available for women in computer science, and will lead to more tech-driven initiatives on campus.
