Gary Felder's Favorite Links

This page is a somewhat haphazard collection of the people and web sites that sprang to my mind when I was writing this. I like all of them, and hopefully you can find some things you enjoy. If so check back later and maybe I'll have added more to the list.

Some People

James McNaughton Felder: My son, born on 12/7/04. Click on the link for more pictures of him than you probably care to see.

Rosemary McNaughton: Astronomy teacher, singer, and all around wonderful person. She also happens to be my wife. Here's a picture of us together.

Kenny Felder: My brother Kenny runs a web site called the "Math and Physics Help Home Page" filled with papers on math and science topics for general audiences. If you don't have much background in math or science but you always wanted to know what the theory of relativity was all about or what all those wierd trigonometry functions really are, this is the site for you. It also contains some of my papers in the same vein.

Richard Felder: Richard Felder is a chemical engineering professor who has devoted his career to the improvement of higher education. He's also my father. This site is a collection of papers and other resources on effective teaching, with an emphasis on college level science and engineering teaching.

Some Other Cool Web Sites

The Hunger Site: The easiest way to give to charity that I've ever heard of. Go to this site and click on their button and in exchange for getting to show you a banner ad several companies will donate food to the hungry. You're allowed to use it once per day per IP address.

The Straight Dope: Cecil Adams writes a weekly column of well-researched answers to virtually any conceivable question. Want to know how to kill cockroaches? How much clouds weigh? If it's really true what they say about Catherine the Great and the horse? This is the place to go.

The Onion: This weekly humor magazine originally started by students at the University of Wisconsin in Madison is easily one of the funniest publications I've ever seen. If you like it I would also highly recommend their book "Our Dumb Century."

Snopes: Urban legends and related items. This site is a wonderful source of information about commonly told stories, true and false. Most importantly I have found that any rumor or chain letter circulating around the Internet is likely to be listed here with a well-researched account of what about the rumor is or isn't true. I highly recommend looking here (or at some similar site) before ever acting on an email that asks you to circulate it or do anything else in response to it. I generally get good results by going to their database search and entering one or two keywords from the email message.

Wintergreen Rental Home: The house called "Magic River" is one of the nicest places I've been for a vacation. This is a five-bedroom house in the Appalachian mountains of Virginia available for rental. It's right next to the Wintergreen ski resort. It's a beautiful house in the middle of beautiful woods.
