Picker Engineering Program

All of us in the Picker Engineering Program have a common goal: educating engineers who address human needs through invention, resources and technology.

We offer the degree in engineering science because, in the best Smith tradition, we believe that women engineers should think deeply and broadly about the effect their professional knowledge will have on the well-being of those whose trust they hold.

Lindsey NguyenSmith Engineer Competes on Reality TV Show

This summer, Lindsey Nguyen '10 participated in an engineering reality show, Design Squad, produced by WGBH, a PBS affiliate in Boston. Each week she was teamed with 2 other college students and given an engineering-oriented challenge. At the end of the week, each team tested its design, and their clients awarded points for the best engineering. The series will be aired next fall. Read more. Lindsey discusses her experience (QuickTime).

Denise McKay2008 Engineering Forum Speakers

This year's Engineering Forum will deal with topics such as "Using Mechanical Stimuli to Enhance Bone Mass" and "Engineering for a Socially Just World." Among the speaks is MIT professor John Ochsendorf (pictured), recipient of the 2008 MacArthur 'genius' grant. Thursdays at McConnell 103, noon to 1 p.m. All Welcome. View list of speakers

photovoltaic power systemStudents Design Photovoltaic Power Systems

Upper level engineering students are learning to design photovoltaic (PV) power systems in a Renewable Energy Power Systems Design course offered for the first time at Smith by Professor McKay, a new addition to the Picker faculty. This course applies thermodynamics, electrochemistry and circuit theory to design PV and fuel cell systems. View slide show of students measuring the electrical characteristics of PV modules. VDS updateSmith Students Participate in Vehicle Design Summit

This summer five Smith engineering students traveled to Toreno, Italy, to work with an international team of students on the creation of an energy efficient hybrid vehicle with the goal of a fuel economy of 100 mpg and a 95% reduction in life cycle costs. Read more about the program and the final update from Sari Field, team leader.
