History and Accreditation

ACCREDITATION

The Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology, Inc. (ABET) awarded accreditation to the Picker Engineering Program in 2005. The status is retroactive to include the first two classes that graduated with bachelor of science degrees Smith College.

ABET requires a broad education that prepares students to understand the impact of engineering solutions in a global, economic, environmental, and societal context. Students also must develop the ability to:

Apply knowledge of mathematics, science, and engineering

Design and conduct experiments, as well as to analyze and interpret data

Design a system, component, or process to meet  desired needs within realistic constraints such as economic, environmental, social, political, ethical, health and safety, manufacturability, and sustainability

Function on multi-disciplinary teams

Identify, formulate, and solve engineering problems

Communicate effectively

Use the techniques, skills, and modern engineering tools necessary for engineering practice

In addition, ABET requires that students develop:

An understanding of professional and ethical responsibility

Recognition of the need for, and an ability to engage in life-long learning

A knowledge of contemporary issues
