History and Accreditation

Like Smith College itself, the Picker Engineering Program is pioneering, the first and only accredited engineering program in the nation just for women. It demonstrates the innovative ways that engineering can be woven into the fabric of the liberal arts environment.

Since the program enrolled its first students in the fall of 2000, it has grown steadily. Engineering is now one of the most popular majors among entering students.

Picker students become confident, creative engineers able to cross traditional boundaries between the sciences and the humanities. As critical thinkers and socially responsible decision makers, they are helping to engineer a sustainable future for our global community.
