LINDA ELLEN JONES, PH.D.
Director of the Picker Engineering Program
Rosemary Bradford Hewlett '40 Professor of Engineering

Throughout her career, Linda E. Jones has earned a reputation as an expert in the synthesis, structure, and degradation of structural carbon and carbides used in aerospace and other severe environment applications. Her current laboratory research focuses on high temperature oxidation and degradation, as well as the measurement of environmental effluents produced via manufacturing processes.

As an undergraduate, Jones studied chemistry at Mary Washington College. After graduation, she worked as a propellant chemist in the development of rockets. Her work with fuels and propellants led Jones to pursue a Ph.D. in fuel science at Penn State.

Through research with a professor studying carbon and carbon composites for use on aircraft, Jones became interested in the ceramics used to protect the carbon/carbon composites. Since then, her focus has been highly energetic materials and how they interplay with carbon/carbon, carbons and certain carbides.

She is the recipient of research grants from the National Science Foundation's Center for Glass Research, the Environmental Protection Agency, and the Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory Carbon/Carbide Materials Branch.

Jones was named the American Carbon Society's Graffin Lecturer for her distinguished contributions to carbon science and engineering. She currently serves on the American Carbon Society's executive board and is active with the European and Asian Carbon Society. Jones also is the education secretary for the American Ceramic Society's Glass Division and president of the Ceramic Education Council. She has authored more than 80 publications for a range of scientific journals.

Throughout her career, Jones has been committed to the advancement of women and minorities in science, technology and engineering.
