An engineering student’s
academic experience at Smith College culminates in a final
design project pursued through the Senior Design Clinic. These projects
provide students with hands-on experience solving
real-world engineering problems for real clients. The Design Clinic as a whole
is a physical manifestation of the principles and knowledge
on which the Picker Engineering Program is built.
Students work in groups
of three or four under the guidance of both a faculty advisor
and one or more technical liaisons from the sponsoring organization. Projects begin
in September and are completed the following May. The technical liaison
outlines the project requirements, approves the team's proposal
for accomplishing the work, and receives weekly progress reports.
The student teams present their work-in-progress during public
forums held both semesters, and to a panel of faculty and
practicing engineers for a mid-year review. Upon completion
of the project, the student teams submit final written reports
to their sponsors, and formally present their results
at a special year-end event. Additionally, student teams are
encouraged to visit their sponsoring organizations to deliver
the summary presentation on site.
The majority of the
projects are funded through agreements with industry or government sponsors,
for whom the students solve engineering problems and/or produce
an implementable end-product.
