Picker Engineering Program

All of us in the Picker Engineering Program have a common goal: educating engineers who address human needs through invention, resources and technology.

We offer the degree in engineering science because, in the best Smith tradition, we believe that women engineers should think deeply and broadly about the effect their professional knowledge will have on the well-being of those whose trust they hold.

Engineer Your Life

Is Engineering For You?

The National Academy of Engineering has posted a Web site for high-school girls considering a career in engineering. Engineer Your Life contains sketches of young, female engineers who talk about working with their local communities to solve real problems. The site explains how to prepare for college engineering programs—what high-school courses to take, the experience of studying engineering, choosing an engineering program—and provides information about starting salaries.

Design Clinic

Design Clinic Presentations

Engineering seniors presented their year-long design projects on May 2. Each of the five teams developed real-life solutions for companies including MIT Lincoln Laboratory, IBM, August Design, Northampton Office of Planning and Development and the Natural Resources Conservation Service.

Ellis, associate professor of engineering, was recently named a winner of the U.S. Professor of the Year Award from the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE)—the only national award for excellence in undergraduate teaching and mentoring. Ellis, a former recipient of the Sherrerd teaching award, was presented with the award in November, 2007.
