Mountain Day, 2000 (September 27) dawned foggy but with the promise of eventual sun. In observance of this important holiday we put aside lab reports and lesson plans and drove off to the wilds of New Hampshire. After a grueling hike, ably led by Virgina "The Welsh Mountain Goat" White, we arrived at the summit and feasted on a large chunk of cheese carried by Bob "Always Prepared" Linck.

The downward trip
As predicted by Kate "I Don't Think I'll Be Able To Make It Back Down This Part" Queeney, the return trip proved challenging, at least for some. . .
. . . but we all made it back in one piece. Even better, Kevin's truck was still there, ready to transport us through the mud, back to the highway and Virginia's car.
It's not over yet!
A flat tired stranded Virginia, Becci and Kate on Route 91 in Vermont. Rumors that the flat tire had anything to do with braking suddenly to avoid a speed trap are unconfirmed. Here Virginia supervises the work of the mechanic who answered their call for help. Kevin, Bob and Daniela--too caught up in a a lively discussion about the Jahn-Teller effect to notice the plight of their compatriots--were safely back in Northampton and missed all the fun.
