Chemistry Minor

A minor in chemistry focuses on the four semester introduction to chemistry that encompasses Chemistry I to Chemistry IV. These courses offer a survey of general and organic chemistry that constitutes the basis of chemical knowledge. To complete the required courses, a student must take one or more (see below) courses at an advanced level to gain a detailed understanding of some aspect of chemical science.

A minor in chemistry requires 21 credits in chemistry. The exact courses depend upon whether one takes Chm111 or Chm118 (or utilizes advanced placement credits). Normally, Chm400, Special Studies, may not be used to fulfill the requirements; nor may courses used to fulfill the minor be taken S/U. Any member of the Department may act as a minor adviser.

For students taking Chm111. Required courses are Chm111, Chm222, Chm223, and Chm224. To achieve the needed 21 credits an additional course in chemistry is required. Suggested courses are any of the 300 level courses which require only Chm223 or Chm224 as pre-requisities.

For students taking Chm118. Required courses are Chm118, Chm222, and Chm223. To achieve the 21 credits students need to take two additional 300-level courses from the departmental offerings.

For students using advanced placement to replace Chm111. Advanced placement can be used to accelerate or replace a deficiency of credits. If a student uses advanced placement to replace Chm111, the required courses for a minor are Chm222, Chm223, and Chm224 and one additional course at the 300-level from the departmental offerings.
