Last year the Department suggested a new major to the College and has had that major approved. (Current seniors--class of 2010--are governed by the old major.) The new major requires the following:
- CHM 111 and CHM 224 (or CHM 118)
- CHM 222
- Three out of the following four courses: Physical Chemistry I and II, CHM 331 and CHM 332, Organic II, CHM 223, and Advanced Inorganic, CHM 363.
- Two out of the following three lab courses: CHM 326, CHM 336, and CHM 346.
- Additional courses to bring the total number of courses to 10. These can be selected from courses in items 3 and 4, from other chemistry electives (at or above the 300 level), from independent research (up to one course only), or from BCH 252 (Biochemistry), BCH 352 (Biochemistry), PHY 332 (Solid State Physics), PHY 340 (Quantum Mechanics), PHY 348 (Thermal Physics) or GEO 301 (Aqueous geochemistry).
- This is a minimum major. For various career objectives, it may be useful for students to take additional courses. Please discuss this with your advisor.
The following chart shows when the courses in the above list might be taken. Required courses have a pale blue background. Courses from the 3 out of 4 list have a sky blue background. Lab courses (2 out of 3) are indicated with a grey background, and other electives are given with a beige background.

The major for current seniors--class of 2010--is:
- The Chemistry I to IV series of courses: CHM 111, CHM 222, CHM 223, CHM 224 with the associated laboratories.
- Synthesis, CHM 226 lecture and laboratory.
- Physical Chemistry I and II: CHM 331 and CHM 332, the latter with a laboratory.
- Instrumental Analysis: CHM 347 lecture and laboratory.
- Inorganic Chemistry: CHM 363.
- A further six credits in chemistry above the 200 level. Four of the six credits may be counted from the research courses, CHM 400, CHM 430, and CHM 432, or from BCH 252 (Biochemistry), BCH 352 (Biochemistry), PHY 332 (Solid State Physics), PHY 340 (Quantum Mechanics), PHY 348 (Thermal Physics) or GEO 301 (Aqueous geochemistry).
Courses fulfilling the major requirements may not be taken with the S/U option.
Special Issues: CHM 118 can be taken in lieu of CHM 111 and CHM 224. Consult a chemistry advisor before enrolling in CHM 118. The mathematics prerequisite for CHM 331 is MTH 112 or MTH 114. It is recommended that students take PHY 115 and MTH 212 (or PHY 210) before CHM 331.
