Office hours: Monday and Tuesday 2-3 pm and by appointment as necessary
This course deals with the function, biosynthesis, structure elucidation and total synthesis of the smaller molecules of nature. Emphasis will be on terpenoids from plant essential oils, steroids including cholesterol and the sex hormones, alkaloids and nature's defense chemicals, molecular messengers and chemical communication.

There is no textbook for this class; instead, you will be using library resources.
Objectives
The objectives in this course can be summarized as follows:
a) To appreciate the richness, diversity and significance of the smaller molecules in nature, and to investigate the methodologies used to study and synthesize these substances.
b) In the context of (a), to review relevant chemical principles and organic reactions.
c) To become acquainted with the current literature in the field.
